Dry Tortugas
December 9th, 2006
We had been in Key West with our daughter Keri experiencing great weather so we decided to sail to the Dry Tortugas. The first night we stopped at the Marquesas about 25 Nm from Key West and experienced a great sunset with a green flash. The next day was a 40 Nm spinnaker run to the Dry Tortugas. We met two other cruising couples headed to Belize and got together for dinner on local gruper provided in exchange for rum by the local fishermen. A front came through overnight and we spent several days laying low, visiting Fort Jefferson and reading. Thursday was a spectuacular day and we sailed over to Loggerhead Key for snorkelboarding and sunbathing. Unfortunaley there were Porteguese Man-O-War all around which limited our enthusiasm for swimming. Friday another front came through but the winds were favorable albiet strong and we had a very-fast close-reach back to Key West.
